ORAT’s acronym: Operational Readiness and Transition. This refers to operating a new facility on opening day without hiccups. It was created in order that the new facility transitions from a construction site to a fully operating facility.
ORAT aims for an acceptable state of operation of a facility that is agreed and understood by all. It provides the Users to operate the facilities during normal, contingency and emergency activities, and is also considered as a deliverable by the ORAT team.

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
SOP’s form the backbone of the ORAT process because all operations should have an SOP associated with it. During the ORAT Programme SOP’s have to be developed and approved in principle before staff start training on the content of the SOP’s. Once training is complete na series of proving Trial Operations are held to make sure that the SOP’s that are developed actually work in the field during operations. Once the Trials are successful the SOP’s can be ratified and finally approved for use during live operations. Over and above the SOP’s we have Irregular Operating Procedures (IOP) or Fallback Procedures and Emergency Operating Procedures (EMP). These proccesses have to be identified and developed.
O
Training
It is very important to have a proper Training Programme when carrying out an ORAT Programme. The importance of proper training cannot be emphasised enough. There are different types of training that must be done in order that all the Stakeholders are ready for live operations. The Training that has to take place is Familiarisation Training, Job Specific Training, Contractors Equipment Training and Emergency Training.
Familiarisation Training
Familiarisation Training is very important and cannot be emphasised enough that every Stakeholder that will be working or involved in the Live Operations at the facility, should undergo Familiarisation Training. This type of training allows the Stakeholders to understand how the facility works and where all the touchpoints and facilities are located.Ideally what happens is that the Trainer takes a group of staff along a predetermined route within the facility, a route that will expose all the different touchpoints or areas that will need to be known about for them to carry out their duties. Ideally there should be 100% attendance of staff for this type of training.
Job Specific Training
Job Specific training is what it’s name implies, it is Training that prepares the Stakeholder for the specific job that they will be doing.
